What is Skin?
The skin is the largest organ of the human body, serving as a protective barrier between the internal organs and the external environment. It covers the entire body surface and has a wide range of functions that are essential for overall health and well-being. Here’s a brief overview of what the skin does for the body:
Protection: The skin acts as a physical barrier, protecting the body from harmful environmental factors such as UV radiation, pathogens, toxins, and physical injury. The outermost layer of the skin, the epidermis, prevents the entry of microorganisms and helps maintain a sterile environment.
Regulation of Body Temperature: The skin plays a crucial role in thermoregulation, helping to maintain a stable body temperature. When the body gets too hot, sweat glands in the skin produce sweat, which evaporates and cools the body. Conversely, when the body gets cold, blood vessels in the skin constrict to reduce heat loss and keep the body warm.
Sensation: The skin is richly supplied with sensory receptors that allow us to perceive touch, pressure, temperature, and pain. These nerve endings send signals to the brain, enabling us to interact with the environment and experience tactile sensations.
Excretion: Sweat glands in the skin excrete waste products, such as water, electrolytes, and small amounts of toxins, through sweat. This process helps eliminate metabolic waste and maintain fluid balance within the body.
Vitamin D Synthesis: When exposed to sunlight, the skin can produce vitamin D, which is essential for the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, and plays a crucial role in maintaining bone health.
Immune Function: The skin houses various immune cells that are part of the body’s defense system. These cells help protect against pathogens and play a role in immune responses and inflammation.
Appearance and Identity: The skin’s appearance, including color, texture, and integrity, contributes to a person’s physical appearance and plays a role in self-esteem, social interaction, and cultural identity.
The skin is a complex organ that performs numerous vital functions, beyond its external appearance. Its role extends far beyond aesthetics, as it acts as a vital interface between our bodies and the surrounding environment, helping to keep us protected, regulated, and connected to the world around us.
Skin Anatomy
The skin has three main layers:
Epidermis
The outermost layer that protects against pathogens and UV radiation. It consists of several sublayers, including the stratum corneum and basal layer.
Dermis
Located beneath the epidermis, it provides support, nourishment, and houses various structures like blood vessels, nerves, and glands.
Subcutaneous (Hypodermis)
The deepest layer composed of fat tissue, providing insulation and cushioning. It also contains blood vessels and larger nerves.

The skin is composed of three primary layers, each with its own unique structure and functions. From the outermost layer to the innermost layer, these layers are:
The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin and acts as a protective barrier against external factors. It is composed of several sublayers, including:
Stratum Corneum: This is the topmost layer of the epidermis and consists of dead skin cells called corneocytes. It provides protection against moisture loss and environmental irritants.
Stratum Granulosum: This layer is responsible for the production of keratin, a protein that provides strength and waterproofing to the skin.
Stratum Spinosum: The stratum spinosum contains cells called keratinocytes, which produce keratin and help maintain the skin’s strength and integrity.
Stratum Basale: The stratum basale is the deepest layer of the epidermis and contains cells called basal cells. These cells divide and migrate upwards, replenishing the upper layers of the epidermis.
Melanocytes, which produce melanin (the pigment responsible for skin color), are also found in this layer.
Dermis
The dermis is the middle layer of the skin, located beneath the epidermis. It provides structural support and houses various important structures.
The dermis consists of:
Collagen and Elastin Fibers: The dermis is rich in collagen and elastin fibers, which provide strength, elasticity, and resilience to the skin.
Blood Vessels: Blood vessels within the dermis supply nutrients and oxygen to the skin cells and help regulate body temperature.
Hair Follicles and Sebaceous Glands: Hair follicles are located in the dermis and produce hair. Sebaceous glands, which are connected to hair follicles, secrete sebum (an oily substance) that lubricates and moisturizes the skin.
Sweat Glands: Sweat glands are also found in the dermis and produce sweat, which helps regulate body temperature.
Nerve Endings: The dermis contains sensory nerve endings that enable the perception of touch, pressure, pain, and temperature.
Subcutis (Hypodermis)
The subcutis, also known as the hypodermis or subcutaneous tissue, is the deepest layer of the skin. It consists primarily of adipose (fat) tissue that provides insulation, cushioning, and energy storage. The subcutis also contains blood vessels and larger nerve fibers.
These three layers work together to protect the body, regulate temperature, provide sensory input, and maintain overall skin health. Each layer has its own distinct functions and plays a crucial role in the overall structure and function of the skin.

Fitzpatrick Test: Identifying your skin type
If you have ever tried to find the perfect foundation, you might have heard of the Fitzpatrick test.
The Fitzpatrick Scale is the most widely-used method for determining skin types, which is helpful in determining appropriate aesthetic treatments and skin care for each individual. This rating system measures the amount of pigment in the skin and tolerance one’s skin has to the sun.
Benefits of knowing your Fitzpatrick
The Fitzpatrick test allows one to understand which treatments will work best and which treatments could cause unwanted side effects. By assessing the rating, one can determine what kind of results can be expected from an aesthetic treatment. Skin types IV-VI run a higher chance of pigmentation with treatments such as chemical peels, dermabrasion, or laser treatment.
Knowing your Fitzpatrick is also important to evaluate your risk for skin cancer. Melanin in the skin absorbs and scatters energy from UV light to protect skin cells from sun damage. Skin types with less pigmentation have less melanin and are more susceptible to harmful sun rays.

The Fitzpatrick Scale is a numerical classification system that is used to determine the skin type and level of sun sensitivity of an individual. It was developed in 1975 by a Harvard dermatologist named Thomas Fitzpatrick and is still widely used in the skincare industry today.
The Fitzpatrick Scale is based on the amount of melanin in the skin, which is the pigment that gives skin its color. It takes into account factors such as skin tone, eye color, and hair color to classify individuals into one of six categories, numbered I through VI:
- Type I: Very fair skin, always burns, never tans. Skin is very sensitive to the sun.
- Type II: Fair skin, usually burns, rarely tans. Skin is moderately sensitive to the sun.
- Type III: Medium skin, sometimes burns, sometimes tans. The skin has moderate sensitivity to the sun.
- Type IV: Olive skin, rarely burns, often tans. The skin has low to moderate sensitivity to the sun.
- Type V: Brown skin, rarely burns, tans easily. The skin has low sensitivity to the sun.
- Type VI: Dark brown or black skin, never burns, tans easily. The skin has a very low sensitivity to the sun.
The Fitzpatrick Scale is used to determine the appropriate treatments and products for an individual’s skin type, as well as the risk of sun damage and skin cancer. It is important to note that the Fitzpatrick Scale is not an exact science and that many factors can affect an individual’s skin type and sensitivity to the sun, including genetics, age, and lifestyle.

Skin Conditions
Acne, also known as acne vulgaris, is a long-term skin disease that occurs when hair follicles are clogged with dead skin cells and oil from the skin. It is characterized by blackheads or whiteheads, pimples, oily skin, and possible scarring Sebaceous Cyst A sebaceous cyst is a small lump or bump under the skin. This type of cyst is not cancerous. They are most often found on the face, neck, upper back, and upper chest, but can occur on other sites of the body as well. Usually, a sebaceous cyst grows very slowly and doesn’t cause pain.

Types of Acne
Whiteheads: Whiteheads occur when a hair follicle becomes clogged with oil and dead skin cells. The pore stays closed, creating a white or flesh-colored bump on the skin.
Blackheads: Blackheads occur when a hair follicle becomes clogged with oil and dead skin cells, and the pore stays open. The top of the bump may appear black or dark brown.
Papules: Papules are small, red, raised bumps that occur when the hair follicle becomes inflamed.
Pustules: Pustules are similar to papules, but they contain pus. They appear as small, red bumps with a white or yellow center.
Nodules: Nodules are large, painful, inflamed bumps that occur deep in the skin. They can be red or flesh-colored and may not come to a head.
Cysts: Cysts are similar to nodules but are larger and filled with pus. They are often painful and can cause scarring.

Rosacea is a common rash, found on the central part of the face, usually of a middle-aged person. A tendency to flush easily is followed by persistent redness on the cheeks, chin, forehead and nose, and by crops of small inflamed red bumps and pus spots.

Telangiastacia – Dilated small blood vessels on the skin or membranes anywhere on the body.

Acne scarring – Leftover scars and pitting for clients that have had Grade IV acne.

Stretch marks – Irregular lines or streaks found on women and men on the skin where it has been stretched or distended, especially due to pregnancy, sudden weight gain, and obesity.

Cherry angiomas – These are common skin growths that can develop on most areas of the body they have small blood vessels inside of them that give them their reddish color.

Milia – Tiny white bumps that get trapped under the epidermis.

Seborrheic keratosis – Non-cancerous skin condition that appears as a waxy brown, black, or tan growth.

Nodules – Fixed swelling of the tissue that is firm and looks like knots under the skin.

Skin tags – Small soft benign skin growth that are harmless but the appearance can be unsightly.

Spider Veins – Dilated capillaries on the skin, resembling spider legs.

Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra – These are common brown moles that look similar to skin tags; they are common in African Americans or races with darker skin tones.

Syringoma – Benign growths of the sweat gland that appear around the eyes or the neck area.

Moles/macules – These are a collection of pigmented areas that reside on the top layers of the epidermis, usually in a brown, blueish, or black pigment.

Contagious Skin Conditions
Impetigo – This is a bacterial infection that involves the superficial skin. The most common presentation is yellowish crusts on the face, arms, or legs.

Herpes/cold sores – Herpes simplex is a viral disease caused by the herpes simplex virus. Oral herpes involves the face or mouth. It may result in small blisters in groups often called cold sores or fever blisters.

Fungal ringworm – Ringworm of the Face (Tinea Faciei) Ringworm on the face outside of the beard area is called tinea faciei. On the face, ringworm is rarely ring-shaped. Characteristically, it causes red, scaly patches with indistinct edges.

Lice – Adult lice infest hairs of the scalp, axilla, chest, pubic and rarely, eyebrows, and eyelashes. Infestation of lice on eyebrows or eyelashes is most commonly caused by phthirus pubis, which is transferred by hand contact from the genital area to the eye.

Aging Skin Conditions
Age spots – Also known as liver spots brown or black spots that come with aging.

Jowls – Jowls are loose fleshly parts of the jawline that starts to hang more prominently as we age.

Hooded eyes – Excess skin that’s folding down from the brow bone to the lash line, which obscures your crease, shrinks your eyelids and can make you look drowsy.
